I told him they were ice but he didn’t believe me. Jon said they were some kind of puff balls. They looked like cotton or tissue paper or the fluffy part of a milk weed plant. We both noticed these white objects on the ground. We found the trail and soon came to a small clearing in the forest.
With cameras in hand, it was time to hike. We drove a mile or 2 down the road and found the distinctive turn-in and dirt mound that state park workers had mentioned. We did an ‘about face’ and headed south, chasing down 2 state park employees for directions along the way. One of the Crawford County sites I had intended to visit was the remnants of a historic iron furnace that operated from the 1840‘s until 1870. This anecdote tripped a trigger in my memory that had clearly misfired earlier.
The roadside marker mentioned the high iron content of the bedrock in the county and the industry that grew out of that geologic circumstance. We turned around and headed back to I-44 to check out a historic marker that we had passed earlier. Since I had done the research, we both decided that it would be better for Jon to drive while I navigate so he took the wheel and we headed for the northeastern reaches of the Ozarks in Crawford County.Our first destination was Onondaga Cave State Park which was, unfortunately, closed for the season. We are longtime friends and were both looking forward to this little excursion but we hadn’t traveled together since college - which was a VERY long time ago - so we weren’t exactly sure what to expect from this “adventure”. On this three day journey, I would be accompanied by Jon G., my editor for this blog. This trip would be a little different however. It had been 4 long months since my last county road trip and I was anxious to be wandering through Missouri again.
